  • The Alleghany Historical and Genealogical Society and Alleghany Chamber of Commerce will host an event at the Silver Dollar Music Park at 6 p.m. to generate ideas for how the county will celebrate its 150th anniversary.   • Glade Creek Volunteer Fire Department will have a Mother’s Day breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the firehouse. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Menu will include biscuits and gravy, eggs, choice of country ham or bacon, applesauce, fresh fruit, coffee, orange juice or milk. Cold cereal will be available for children for $2. All proceeds will go to the fire department.

  • The American Red Cross Wilkes-Alleghany counties chapter will offer an adult CPR/AED class from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Alleghany Wellness Center.
  • The Alleghany County Public Library will host feature the Balloon Lady at 4 p.m. in recognition of Children’s Book Week. The program is free of charge and is part of the library’s Hometown and Heritage Programs. For more information, call 372-5573.
  • Glade Creek Elementary School will host a buy one get one free book fair May 12 and May 14 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; May 13 and May 15 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and May 16 from 8 a.m. to noon.

  • The Alleghany County Democratic Party will have a free fish fry and barbecue from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on River’s Edge Road, watch for signs.

  • The Highland Camerata spring concerts will be held May 18 at 3 p.m. at Galax Presbyterian Church; May 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Sparta Presbyterian; May 22 at 7:30 p.m. Brush Creek Hall; and June 13 at 6 p.m. at High Meadows Golf and Country Club in Roaring Gap.   • A grief support group, sponsored by High Country Health Care System Hospice, meets every Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at Wilkes Community College Alleghany Campus in Room 301.   • The Alleghany Pregnancy Center is offering free baby’s first month classes, which will be held Mondays and Thursdays, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. The new program is for parents of newborns and parents in the last two months of pregnancy. Examples of topics to be covered include how to avoid SIDS; your baby can sleep; car seat safety and emergency aid for illnesses. Each participant or couple will receive a packet of information.
