Thursday, Sept. 2

  • Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors will hold its annual meeting at the fire station at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
  • Piney Creek Afterschool will have a Geocaching Treasure Hunt at 5:30 p.m. at Piney Creek Elementary School. Cost to participate is $5 per person. Prizes will be awarded to the top five finishers. Refreshments will be served. Anyone planning to attend is asked to bring a GPS unit to use in the hunt and USB cable to connect to a computer. Proceeds will go to the sixth through eighth grade trip to Williamsburg.
  • Alleghany County Public Library will host an event entitled “Sweet Harmonies of Bobby Patterson and Willard Gayheart” at 6:30 p.m. Patterson plays the banjo, guitar and mandolin and Gayheart plays the guitar and is also a pencil artist, whose works characterize nostalgic glimpses of Appalachia including musicians. The program is sponsored by the Alleghany Arts Council with partial funding by a N.C. Arts Council Grassroots Grant. For more information, call 372-5573.
  • The Alleghany County Republican Party will meet at the Silver Dollar Music Park in Glade Valley. The meeting will be preceded with a catered dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Cost is $8 per person.   • The Alleghany County Republican Party will host a grand opening celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the 2010 election headquarters located at 265 South Main St. in Sparta. Scheduled to attend is N.C. Representative Sarah Stevens at 11 a.m.; Congresswoman Virginia Foxx at noon; and local candidates. For more information, contact Gaye Randle at 363-9181.
  • Blue Ridge Music Center will host a family traditions concert featuring the Sheets Family Band and Dale Jett and Hello Stranger at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $10. For more information, call (276) 236-5309.
  • The Albert Hash Memorial Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Mount Rogers Combined School in Whitetop, Va. Admission is $8 with children 12 years of age and under free of charge.   • A Blue Ridge Parkway 75th Celebration will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Crouse Park in Sparta. Featured will be the county's quilt square that will become part of the anniversary quilt, memorabilia from the Parkway's history and comments by officials, followed by music from the Crouse House Pickers.   • The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners has re-scheduled its Sept. 6 meeting to Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the County Administration Building at 348 South Main St. in Sparta.

    Saturday, Sept. 11

  • Alleghany County 4-H will have an open horse show at 9 a.m. at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds.
  • New River State Park will host a program entitled “A Haiku Walk in the Park” at 1 p.m. at the park’s 221 access. Anyone planning to attend is asked to bring a writing pad and pen and wear sturdy shoes. The program is free of charge and for ages 12 and up.
  • Blue Ridge Music Center will feature Laura Boosinger and Josh Goforth from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Phil Jamison and the Buck Mountain Band will present a free flatfooting workshop from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys and the Round Peak Boys will be in concert at 7 p.m. For more information, call (276) 236-5309.

  • A Junior Olympic (JO)?Volleyball meeting for sixth through 12th-graders will be held at 2 p.m. at the Alleghany High School new gym.

  • Piney Creek United Methodist Church will have a country breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Cost is by donation. Menu will include tenderloin, ham, hash brown casserole, eggs, grits, gravy and biscuits, jellies, juice and coffee.
  • Camp Zion Church will have a golf tournament at Crestview Golf Course in Ennice beginning at 9 a.m. There will be prizes for first, second and third place, longest drives for men and women and closest to pin on all Par 3. If anyone makes a hole-in-one on Par 3, they will receive $100. Cost to participate is $25 per person. Proceeds will go to the church building fund.
