Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors will hold its annual meeting at the fire station at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
Piney Creek Afterschool will have a Geocaching Treasure Hunt at 5:30 p.m. at Piney Creek Elementary School. Cost to participate is $5 per person. Prizes will be awarded to the top five finishers. Refreshments will be served. Anyone planning to attend is asked to bring a GPS unit to use in the hunt and USB cable to connect to a computer. Proceeds will go to the sixth through eighth grade trip to Williamsburg.
Alleghany County Public Library will host an event entitled “Sweet Harmonies of Bobby Patterson and Willard Gayheart” at 6:30 p.m. Patterson plays the banjo, guitar and mandolin and Gayheart plays the guitar and is also a pencil artist, whose works characterize nostalgic glimpses of Appalachia including musicians. The Alleghany County Republican Party will meet at the Silver Dollar Music Park in Glade Valley. The meeting will be preceded with a catered dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Cost is $8 per person. The Alleghany County Republican Party will host a grand opening celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the 2010 election headquarters located at 265 South Main St. in Sparta. New River State Park will host a program entitled “A Haiku Walk in the Park” at 1 p.m. at the park’s 221 access. Anyone planning to attend is asked to bring a writing pad and pen and wear sturdy shoes. The program is free of charge and for ages 12 and up.
