He was born July 15, 1934 in Sparta to the late Kyle and Dora Cox Todd.<br /><br />He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Todd of Ennice; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Randy and Joy Todd of Ararat and Reed Todd Jr. of Independence; one brother and sister-in-law, R.L. and Edna Todd of Galax, Va.; one sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Paul McMurry of Gate City, Va.; four grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.<br /><br />Graveside services were conducted Monday, March 8 at Pleasant Home cemetery in Alleghany County with the Rev. Pete Hawks officiating.]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[Cecil Calbert Crouse Sr., age 89, of State Road and formerly of Alleghany County, died Sunday, March 7, 2010. He was born May 1, 1920 to the late George and Pearl Andrews Crouse in Alleghany County. He was a postal contractor and served in the United States Armed Forces. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Etta Hutchens Crouse; two sisters; and two brothers.<br /><br />He is survived by four children and a spouse, Jane and Bill Reynolds, Ann “Annie Belle” Crouse Cook and Nancy Crouse, all of State Road and Cecil “Bud” Crouse Jr. of North Wilkesboro; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Woodrow Crouse of Thurmond and Malhon and Ina Rae Crouse of Kernersville; a sister and brother-in-law, Ima Jean and James Chappell of Elkin; four grandchildren and a spouse, Sarah and Dale Bartley, Krista Seagraves, Calbe Gullatt and Bailee Crouse; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend and extended family, Wanda Caudill.<br /><br />Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 10 at 11 a.m. at Grass Creek United Methodist Church. The Rev. John Pillsbury and the Rev. Michael Harrell officiated.<br />]]></description>

He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. Lonnie ran Absher’s Grocery in Sparta for 27 years. He was a member of New Home Freewill Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Lundy and Mae Sidden Absher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Absher; three sisters, Bertha Mabe, Ruth Halsey and Ruby McCann; and two brothers, John Absher and Jimmy Absher.<br /><br />He is survived by one son, Kenneth Absher of Sparta; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and Gary Bryant of Ennice and Brenda Brewer of Sparta; six grandchildren, Tracy Absher, Crystal McMickle, Kaylynn Brewer, Garrett Bryant, Jimmy Bryant and Travis Bryant; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Roy Lee Absher; and several nieces and nephews.<br /><br />Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 7 at New Home Freewill Baptist Church in Piney Creek with burial in the church cemetery.<br />Memorial contributions may be made to New Home Freewill Cemetery Fund, c/o Kenneth Bright, 4868 U.S. Hwy. 221, Sparta, NC 28675; Foundation Fighting Blindness for Retinitis Pigmentosa Research, P.O. Richmond of Sparta; her father, Walter Franklin Richmond of Pulaski, Va.; her mother and stepfather, Alice Villalabos and Pastor Rodriguez of Hillsville; a sister, Alice Ramona Farmer of Hillsville; and two special friends, Faith Johnson and Betty Cook. <br /><br />A graveside service was conducted Thursday, Feb. 25 at Little Vine cemetery in Hillsville with Pastor Chip Neeley officiating.]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[Gale Thomas “Tom” Reeves, age 77, of Tacoma, Wash. and formerly of Sparta, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010. He was the son of the late Lon Mac and Madge Reeves of Sparta. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Van Reeves of Slidell, La.; two sisters, Emoryetta Collins of Norfolk, Va. and Linda Horton of Kincheloe, Mich.; and a granddaughter, Alexandria Reeves. He graduated from Sparta High School and N.C. State University where he played varsity baseball, once playing against his brother, Bill against the University of North Carolina. He retired after 23 years of dedicated service to his country as a Lt. Col. in the United States Army. During his career as a helicopter pilot, he served two tours in Viet Nam and was stationed in various places throughout the world including Germany and Iran.<br /><br />He is survived by his companion, Ann Jeffares of the home; three sons, Steven Reeves of Tacoma, Thomas Reeves of Eugene, Ore. and Rick Reeves of Tennessee; two sisters, Lois Landreth of Sparta and Anne Sexton of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.<br /><br />A private family service was held in Tacoma.<br />]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[Richard Haber “Dick” Moore, age 77, of Oviedo, Fla. and Alleghany County, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010 on his wife’s birthday and the anniversary of his mother’s death in 1944. He was born on April 17, 1932.<br /><br />He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for a number of years and retired as a pest control technician in 1995. He lived in Plantation, Fla. for 40 years and retired to the family vacation home in Alleghany County. Dick loved the mountains and quickly became a “mountain man.” He was a member and deacon of Sparta First Baptist Church, sang in the choir and in the Singing Christmas Tree, occasionally filling in as choir director. He enjoyed line dancing with the Alleghany Jubilee Dancers, singing and dancing in the Hillbilly Show and singing with the Highland Camerata. He was on boards of the Alleghany Planning Committee and Alleghany Cares. Dick and Nancy returned to Florida to be near their son in 2005 due to health reasons, but still considered Sparta home.<br /><br />He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Moore; two children and spouses, Malissa and Dr. Richard Cockman of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Rick and Debbi Moore of Chuluota, Fla.; a sister, Alice Fitzgerald of Middletown, N.Y.; four grandchildren and spouses, Missy and Dr. Paul Von Herrmann of Pace, Fla., Becky Cockman of Augusta, Ga., Keturah and Paul Williams of Nashville, Tenn. and Aaron Moore of Chuluota; and three great-grandchildren, Ellie Von Herrmann, Aimee Von Herrmann and Luke Von Herrman.<br /><br />A memorial service was conducted Saturday, Feb. 27 at First Baptist Church of Oviedo. <br />Local memorial services will be held at Sparta First Baptist Church on April 17, which would have been his 78th birthday.<br />Memorial contributions may be made to the Marjorie Armentrout Scholarship Fund at Sparta First Baptist Church.<br />]]></description>

He and his wife, Annie, moved to North Carolina in 1978. 		<description><![CDATA[Susan Carol Hultin, age 64, of Belmont and Alleghany County, completed her life’s journey on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010. Susan was born March 9, 1945 and grew up in Kingsport, Tenn. She graduated from Wake Forest University in 1967 with a bachelor of arts in French and education and began teaching French at Alexander Graham Junior High School that same year. She earned a master of arts in teaching from Winthrop University in 1977 and a master of science degree in speech pathology from Winthrop University in 1986.<br />She then worked at both Lansdowne Elementary and First Ward Elementary. In 1991, Susan joined the staff of Lake Wylie Elementary and completed her career in education there in 2009, after receiving a diagnosis of cancer. In her 42-year tenure, she was adored and respected by her colleagues, students and their families.<br />Susan cherished those dear to her and loved the simple pleasures of life, including Katy and Jethro, her black labs, Hazel’s chicken pie, and the view from her mountain home in Alleghany County, her place of peace and rejuvenation. Robin and Bet Mangum influenced her life in deep friendship and helped her develop her love of pottery making. <br /><br />She became an accomplished potter and was the featured artist in November 2009 for Alleghany Arts and Crafts. Susan hosted lovely pottery sales every year in which she sold her pottery to collectors from all over and pampered those friends and collectors with her very special homemade cookies and breads. She loved to work in her yard and was a charter member of Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont. As a skilled and encouraging educator, Susan exemplified kindness and patience.<br />Susan received outstanding care from dear friends and specifically from Dr. Mileham, Suny and the nurses at the Oncology/Infusion Center at CMC Fairview, as well as from Dr. Bobo and his staff at CMC Radiology Pineville. The staff at Robin Johnson House lovingly walked with her through the final leg of her journey.<br />Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Sadie Brinkley Hultin and Carl F. “Swede” Hultin of Kingsport, Tenn.; a nephew, Christian Kiesau of Stafford, Va.; and grandparents, Carl A. and Anna Hultin and Early W. and Annie Brinkley.<br /><br />She is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann and Kyle Kiesau of Spartanburg, S.C. and Linda and Earl Winn of Winchester, Tenn.; and one niece and spouse, Jennifer and Webb Roberts and their two children.<br /><br />At Susan’s request, no formal service or visitation will be held in Charlotte.
