The Pope decries the "humiliation…" The French Ambassador refers to "…that (expletive deleted) little country." The New York Times claims "…disproportionate response…" Kofi Annan points to "…occupied territories, in violation of UN directives…" The UN High Commissioner on Refugees talks of "…massive human rights violations…" The European Union says the actions are "unhelpful" to the peace process. The Arab states talk of all-out war. All of this directed at Israel.
Never, in my lifetime, can I recall a more comprehensive display of moral equivalency, craven diplomatic cowardice, shameless disregard for facts and blatant anti-Semitism than in the comments and positions being offered by the UN, European Union countries and the leftist press in response to the "middle eastern problem." In the improbable event of sheer ignorance on their part, a brief review may be in order.
Since its establishment in 1948, the Arab world has launched three all-out assaults on the State of Israel, with the clearly stated goal of annihilation of the Jews. Each time, Israel has single-handedly handed the Arabs their rear-ends on a platter. In its short lifetime, Israel has accomplished more economically, politically and socially than all of the Arab states combined. As a democratic country, enjoying free speech, freedom of association, religious tolerance and the fruits of individual initiative, Israel prospers while European socialism stagnates. It is a thumb in the eye of its Arab neighbors by comparison. It has never engaged in unprovoked assault on its neighbors in its 50 plus year history.
The Arab states, having been soundly defeated three times by a numerically inferior force, have chosen to continue the extermination effort by proxy– supporting the Palestinians financially and materially in terrorist activities. The Arab worlds' public support of the Palestinian "cause" is couched in terms of the establishment of a Palestinian state and Arab solidarity with their "brothers." That "brotherhood" has been well demonstrated over the past thirty years — Syria slaughtered 30,000 Palestinians in Lebanon; Kuwait expelled 300,000; no Arab state, save Jordan, will allow citizenship status and even Jordan has recently foreclosed that option. Yet the "cause" serves a political purpose — diverting attention from the decay and stagnation of the Arab world and providing a target for their people's frustration. And the "Leader" of the Palestinians? Arafat has been a terrorist, liar, and fraud for the past thirty years. His supposed leadership has produced the most depraved and evil society since the defeat of the Third Reich. While bemoaning the lack of progress in peace talks with Israel to the English-speaking press, he is simultaneously, in Arabic, exhorting Palestinian children to strap on explosives and blow up Jews. His avowed aim has been the annihilation of Israel and is a primary subject in the Palestinian Authority schools and textbooks. And regardless of the claims that Islam is a "peaceful" religion, Islamic teachings in the Arab states reinforce Arafat's position on Jewish extermination. That Arafat was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 says more about the Nobel committee and the European states than about Arafat. Of course, neither Arafat nor any of his band of thugs has the commitment or clarity of purpose to strap on explosives and personally demonstrate the path to heaven and 27 virgins. The criticisms leveled by the Pope and the EU would be laughable were it not for the hypocrisy. Where was the Pope when Arafat's minions blew up a Passover celebration and a pizza shop? Where was Mary Robinson when Saddam raised the reward for children blowing themselves up from $10,000 to $25,000?
Where was the French Ambassador when synagogues were burned and trashed by Arabs in France?
Kofi Annan can stonewall an investigation into white slavery committed by UN representatives in Bosnia but self-defense by Israel pops to the top of his "gotta-stop-this" list.
Even the International Committee of the Red Cross has participated by covertly allowing explosive shipments into Israel in Red Cross ambulances.
It is difficult to ignore the similarities between the current positions taken by Europe and International bodies and the conditions existing in1939. Yet if the positions are not the result of latent Anti-Semitism, the only other reasonable explanation is a kind of degenerate, craven stupidity.
Do any of the critics honestly believe that, should Arafat's program of prostituting his "people" through self-destruction succeed, the dogs of terror will not be visited on them later? Do they really expect that two decades of brainwashing of children by Arafat's schools will be reversed by "negotiations?" Is there no limit to the number of times it is acceptable for Arafat to violate his promises before he is described, truthfully, as a pathological liar and committed terrorist?
But then again, maybe it's just me out of step.
