A benefit auction held last Saturday at Alleghany High School raised a little over $21,000 for the Hampton family.
Former Ashe County resident Frederick P. “Freddie" Hammer, already serving eight life terms with no possibility of parole for killing three people in Grayson County, Va. and for killing his nephew Jimmy Blevins in Ashe County, has again confessed to committing additional murders, said Ashe County Sheriff James Williams.
After the third discussion of the matter, the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners agreed on a 4-1 vote to waive half of a penalty against a Texas man who didn't list his home in eastern Alleghany County with the Alleghany Tax Office after construction.

William Alexander “Bill" Graham, III, died last Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the age of 69.

Clarification
A story in last week's edition on Robert L. “Bob" Lane being appointed as the Town Chief of Police indicated that the Sparta Town Council selected Lane unanimously. Lane's appointment was discussed by Council briefly in a closed session on personnel during the meeting, but no vote was taken. Lane was introduced by Sparta Town Manager Bryan Edwards as the Chief of Police. Edwards has the authority, under town code, to appoint the Police Chief.
