After 12 years of serving as the postmaster in Ennice, Ray Cesare applied for and was recently hired to be the postmaster in Sparta. His first day at the new office was July 3.
Of the new position, Cesare said, "I am learning how to manage this office, with includes more computer work. One thing I didn’t have in Ennice was bulk mailers. Donna Greene has been running the office for the last couple of years and she’s been a good mentor."
Cesare went on to say, "The top priority at the Sparta Post Office is making sure every piece of mail is delivered the day it arrives in our office. This includes bulk mail, standard mail and parcels. Our policy is to deliver every piece of mail and we do not hold any mail for delivery the next day. Another priority is working with our customers at the front counter. We are there to help them with their shipping needs, which include mailing packages and purchasing stamps."
Cesare enjoys working with the customers, as well as his co-workers, noting, "there’s a lot of camaraderie" in the workplace.
He added that he would like people to know that the local post office employees consider each piece of mail that goes through the office—from a postcard to a package—to be important, commenting, "It’s good to know that we are responsible for delivering a card or package that brightens someone’s day."
"I’m very impressed with the new employees; everything runs smoothly," Cesare continued. "I’ve never seen a bunch of carriers who are really dedicated to their work. The clerks up front seem to have a great rapport with the customers. I think everyone that comes in here is pleased with the service they receive."
Average Day
Recounting the average day, Cesare commented, "The first truck gets here at 5:30 a.m. and drops our mail. We have a clerk that arrives at 6 a.m. and their job is to sort all the mail. We have to sort the mail to each carrier and for the P.O. Box section. This usually takes two or three hours to get it all done.
