Schools to open Aug. 4

Doors to all four county schools will open for close to 1,600 students on Aug. 4, with elementary through high school students beginning classes that day.
The first day of school will be a full day; Sparta Elementary and Glade Creek students will have school from 8 a.m. until 2:40 p.m., with Piney Creek students in class from 8:10 a.m. until 2:45 p.m., hours that have established for some time, according to the school principal. High school students' hours will be from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.
School supply lists can be found on the school Web site at www.alleghany.k12.nc.us. According to Sharon Lyons, administrative assistant with the school system, supply lists are also available at Dollar General, Kerr Drug, Lowes Foods, Food Lion, Dollar General, Family Dollar.
About 450 students are slated to attend Alleghany High School, according to information attained July 23. Parents and guardians are reminded a homeroom fee of $9 or $14 will be charged for the school year. The lower cost will be for those choosing not to obtain a school lock for their locker. Additional fees will apply, dependant on the courses taken by the student. Additional fees include: agriculture/horticulture ($8), art ($20), Cyber fee if enrolled in more than nine hours ($15), business ($10), English, math and social studies ($5 each) and Spanish ($3).
At the elementary level 259 students, including pre-kindergarten students were enrolled at Glade Creek School as of July 26, a central office representative said. Also on July 26, a total of 182 students were enrolled at Piney Creek and in the early hours of July 23, a total of 680 students-including pre-school students-were enrolled at Sparta. Parents and guardians are reminded all elementary students will be charged a $15 instructional fee.
