Commissioners approve putting sales tax on the ballot

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution that will place a one-quarter cent local option sales tax on the ballot for the November election.

High schoolers may pay for WCC classes

High school students interested in taking college core classes at the local Wilkes Community College campus may have to pay for them.

WCC campus becomes tobacco free in August

Wilkes Community College campuses-including the Alleghany Campus-will be 100 percent Tobacco Free starting Aug. 1, when the college's new policy goes into effect.

Numerous weekend events planned

Several events are on tap for the weekend, including the annual Blue Ridge Mountain Fair, as well as a car show, quilt show, and a bowling benefit.

Fiddlers Convention winners announced

The Alleghany County Fiddlers Convention hosted 42 bands and 236 individual contestants on Friday and Saturday, July 16 and 17 at the Justice Carlisle Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds.
