The Town of Sparta and Alleghany County received more than $30,000 ($32,920) in grant funds to upgrade lighting in six buildings.
The Sparta Town Council approved a 2 percent increase in the water sewer fees, while the tax rate remains at 28 cents and the garbage service rate also remains at its rate of $6.50. No employee raises are included.
The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners received a proposed budget on June 1 from County Manager Don Adams which included a four-cent tax increase.
