The Alleghany Board of Elections held its vote canvass on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The board had about 11 additional ballots to consider, including eight provisional ballots and three absentee ballots that were postmarked by election day.
With one race—the Democrat Primary for County Commissioner between incumbents Milly B. Richardson and Randy Miller—within eight votes prior to the counting of the additional 11, the canvass was one that drew more than the usual amount of interest.
In the end, however, the race tightened but the result did not change. After the canvass on Tuesday, Richardson maintained a six-vote lead over Miller, 412 to 406. Miller asked for the recount and a run off if possible on Tuesday morning, but was told the race is not eligible for the run off during the second primary. A companion story on that matter also appears on this page.
Other candidate vote totals in the Democrat County Commission race included Tom Smith with 754 votes, Larry Cox with 630 votes and Wayne C. Sparks with 288 votes.
According to the official results, the three ballot slots for the Democrats go to Smith, Cox and Richardson, barring any changes in a potential recount.
Even though the local race was deemed ineligble for a run off, at least one Democrat race statewide will see a run off.
