One year later, only scars remain from northern Alleghany tornados

About a year ago, Alleghany residents' lives were turned upside down when two tornados struck the area. A year later, recovery of the incident continues.

Hammer's reward is revoked

Frederick P. "Freddie" Hammer was ordered Monday to return a $15,000 reward he received for telling authorities the location of the body of Jimmy Lee Blevins—a man he had already admitted to murdering.

No runoff to be held for Miller

In a change from an election night (May 4) position, Alleghany Director of Elections Kate Cosner said late last week that she was informed by the North Carolina State Board of Elections that a county commissioners race was not eligible for a runoff.

Town moves forward on Main Street restrooms

After discussions that date back to September 2007, plans are in the works to have public restroom facilities in downtown Sparta after going through a finalizing process and requesting bids.

Local Relay for Life will begin Friday

The 17th Annual Relay for Life is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, at Woodruff Field on Trojan Avenue in Sparta.
