Newcomers net the most votes in local races

Several close local races were reported in unofficial vote totals Tuesday night for the primary election, but two incumbent commissioners were within one-third of one percent of one another for the final spot on the Democrat ticket.

Alleghany has the highest percent change in mail participation in the 2010 census, when compared to surrounding counties, according to information provided through a representative with the U.S. Census Bureau.

Commissioners set first budget talks

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners agreed Monday night to set its first budget meeting on May 12 at 6:30 p.m.
