Committee sends in revised plan for vote
The 21st Century Calendar Committee met Monday afternoon and agreed to send a slightly revised version of the calendar back to the Alleghany Board of Education for a vote next week.
The school board is expected to vote on the calendar March 23 during a called 5 p.m. meeting.
Cox told the committee on Monday, "I think the job of the committee today is to listen to the input that the board has given, the concerns they're having, try to address them the best you can, make what accommodations you think are reasonable and then give them something to vote on…I think if we make some reasonable accommodations and I think the ones we're talking about, my hope is that we would have the majority of the board in support of the revised calendar that has taken their concerns into consideration. I don't think the board wants me to come in with two calendars and say, 'Which one do you like best?' The board wants me to come back with a recommendation from this committee."
Changes addressed included makeup days and summer vacation. Assistant Superintendent Tony Hall explained that under the earlier proposed calendar there would be seven-and-a-half weeks for summer vacation, while under the present calendar there are nine weeks scheduled. He proposed moving the schools' start date to Aug. 4.
