Accident claims Ennice man
An Ennice man died Saturday evening when he was run over by a pickup in the snow off Glade Valley Road, according to Glade Creek Fire Chief David Higgins.
Roderick Watson died at the scene, Higgins said. He was in his early 40s.
People at the scene reported that Watson was driving a pickup in the snow on the property of Bill Carpenter. "It got stuck and he got out behind it and was pulling on it … when it caught traction he slipped and fell and the pickup ran over him," Higgins said.
Watson's body was under the truck, clear of the vehicle, when first responders arrived.
"They had been playing around with the pickup spinning donuts in the snow," Higgins said the witnesses told him. Three others were at the scene when the accident happened. They had also been burning some old logs on the same property.
Glade Creek Fire Department first responders, the Alleghany Ambulance Service and Alleghany deputies were called to the scene. Watson's body was taken to Alleghany Memorial Hospital and he was pronounced dead by the county medical examiner.
The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. near Saddle Mountain Church Road.
"It's just tragic," Higgins said. "Things happen that you just never would expect. We're sorry for the family, our thoughts go to the family," he said.
