County commissioners vote to demolish, replace EMS building

In a special called meeting on Nov. 23, the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners agreed by a 4-0 vote to have a contractor demolish and rebuild the Alleghany EMS base on Cox Street. Commissioner Milly Richardson did not attend the meeting.

Homebuyer tax credit extended

A new law that went into effect Nov. 6 extends the first-time homebuyer credit five months and expands the eligibility requirements for purchasers.

The Appalachian District Health Department has an adequate supply of H1N1 flu vaccine to meet local needs.

Residents reach out to Perry family in wake of tragic wreck

While the Perry family is still struggling to come to grips with the accident that claimed three lives last Monday, Nov. 23, the community is continuing to reach out to the two surviving daughters.

Information offered on Whitehead Union Baptist Church

Whitehead Union Baptist opened its doors to the community in 1938 after the first session of the Union Baptist Association. Information about the church read, "In March of 1938, a community group held a conference at the Whitehead School House.

Christmas Parade

The annual Sparta Christmas Parade was held Saturday and attendance was higher than at any time in recent memory.
