H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines are now available

Vaccine injections for the seasonal influenza virus are now available at the Alleghany County Health Department to the general public, while H1NI nasal spray vaccine is available in limited quantities.

Police seek canine for drug duty

Noting the rise of drug problems in the town and county, Sparta Police Chief Frank Sanders proposed that the Sparta Town Council look into purchasing a drug dog for the Sparta Police Department.

Suit against Sparta is dismissed

Following a Sept. 28 hearing during the civil session of Wilkes County Superior Court, Judge Andy Cromer granted a summary judgment requested by the Town of Sparta in reference to a case filed by Larry McCann.

Annual Fire Parade

PARADE FUN—Sparky the fire dog and Smokey Bear were featured characters at this year's fire parade, held Oct. 7 in Sparta.

16th Hillbilly Show to be held Saturday

The annual Hillbilly Comedy and Variety Show will include two themes—a patriotic theme, as well as celebrating the county's 150th anniversary with skits and acts on the past and the present.

Volunteers honored at Town Council meeting

Volunteers were recognized by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bob Bamberg as part of the Oct. 6 meeting of the Sparta Town Council.
