Doughton Day held at Courthouse; honors family's contributions

On Saturday afternoon, the late R.L. "Farmer Bob" Doughton was remembered for his years of service to the county and country when a painting that once was displayed in the U.S. House of Representatives was unveiled for display in the Alleghany Courthouse.

USDA may fund training facility

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners learned Monday night that the county is moving into the final steps toward receiving grant and loan funds to build a new fire and rescue safety facility.

Water Authority on schedule for Oct. 2010 startup

Work on the water supply line along U.S. 21 from the two-state water project that will eventually provide drinking water to Sparta and Independence, Va. is still under way, but the North Carolina side is complete, said Sparta Town Manager Bryan Edwards, who also serves as chairman of the Virginia-Carolina Water Authority Board.

Suicide prevention and awareness are focus of Saturday event

A "Walk Out of Darkness" will begin at 10 a.m. in the shared parking of Sparta United Methodist Church and Sparta Florist on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Chelsea Jones, (photo at left) an AHS senior volleyball player, was crowned the 2009 AHS Homecoming Queen during halftime of the football team's victory.

Registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 9

Those interested in voting in the upcoming town election (set for Nov. 3) have until Oct. 9 to register to vote.
