A day set aside to honor one of Alleghany's most important leaders is among local events slated for this weekend, along with a Homecoming Parade and Life Chain Sunday.
Doughton Day
Doughton Day on the Courthouse Lawn will celebrate the life of Robert L. "Bob" Doughton this Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Alleghany County Courthouse. The Laurel Springs native is most remembered for passage of Social Security and the creation of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Betsy Doughton Dillon, granddaughter of Bob, said "It is always important to remember our past in this county and I'm really appreciative for the recognition the county is paying to my grandfather and to my Uncle Rufus Doughton."
Memorabilia will be displayed from the Congressman's long service in Washington, D.C. A portrait of a young Doughton will be unveiled for permanent display in the courthouse. This event marks Alleghany County's celebration of the Blue Ridge Parkway's 75th Anniversary that culminates with a huge gathering at Cumberland Knob and Blue Ridge Music Center Sept. 10-12, 2010. Lunch for Saturday will be catered by the Laurel Springs Volunteer Fire Department behind the courthouse beginning at noon in the parking lot of the Senior Center. Lunch is $10 a plate with children six and under free and proceeds go to benefit the fire department.
