WCC plans workforce training

Rapid and practical training for occupations perceived as having strong growth potential in Alleghany, Ashe and Wilkes counties is the goal of a new initiative with a $300,000 budget at Wilkes Community College.

Students return to schools countywide on Aug. 6

Doors to all four county schools will open for in excess of 1,500 students on Aug. 6, with elementary through high school students beginning classes that day.

County grants variance

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners agreed Monday night to grant a variance to Barry Poole for a portion of a subdivision off Saddle Mountain Road.

Pageant draws 200; winners announced

Helen Crouse and Amanda Galyean were named the winners of the Ms. and Miss Alleghany Sesquicentennial Pageant at the Saturday night event at Sparta School Auditorium.

Kramer is minister at Christ Episcopal Church

Ten years after taking part in the founding of Christ Episcopal Church, the Rev. J. Barry Kramer returned to Sparta in February to help the church once more as an interim pastor.
