Numerous weekend events set

Several events are scheduled for the weekend, including the annual Be Happy, Be Healthy event at the hospital, and a reception for Penland glass artists at the Sparta Teapot Museum of Craft and Design.

Be Happy Be Healthy

The annual Be Happy, Be Healthy event will kick off weekend activities Friday. The community health fair, held at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in conjunction with Alleghany Wellness Center, will take place between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Visitors will have the opportunity to attain health care information such as dental and tobacco education. Blood pressure checks, hearing screenings and sugar checks will also available. In addition, free sports physicals will be provided between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the office of Dr. Denise Bryant.

During the festivities, children will have the opportunity to have their face painted, listen to stories, watch a magic show, have train rides, participate in a sack race and fishing game and visit with a clown.

Musical entertainment will be provided during the afternoon and a drawing for door prizes provided by the hospital and Wellness Center will take place.

Reception

The Sparta Teapot Museum of Craft and Design will host a reception Saturday for Penland glass artists Jan Williams and Richard Ritter from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 at its location on Main Street in Sparta. It will include a presentation by Ritter at 4 p.m. According to a press release from the museum, Ritter, who "explores patterned images within solid glass sculptures, currently has a piece from the floral core series—through which crystal and color batch is mixed to create a murinni sculpture— on display locally.

A native of Detroit, Mich., Ritter trained at the College for Creative Studies and Penland School of Crafts. His works can be found in the Cabinet of Germany, the White House Crafts Collection of the Smithsonian Institution, the Detroit Institute of the Arts, the JB Speed Museum in Louisville, Kent., and the Corning Museum of Glass. Ritter maintains a studio in Mitchell County, along with his wife, Williams.
