It was a winding road that led Bob Matthias to the pulpit at Sparta Presbyterian Church, one that crossed both sides of the country and even the other side of the world.

Matthias, a 71-year-old ordained Lutheran minister, came to Alleghany County about five years ago with his wife Laura. He first heard about the Presbyterian Church position from George White, a fellow Rotarian, at a meeting of the club on an early Thursday morning. White was heading up the search committee that was working to find a replacement for outgoing Pastor Thom Burleson, who left the church in 2008.

At the time, Matthias hadn't considered coming out of retirement to lead a church, although he had heard earlier about the opening. "I didn't seek it," Matthias said. But after much consideration and prayer, he said he agreed to serve, noting, "I thought to myself, I'm still able to contribute the community and to the church."

As for the differences between the Lutheran and Presbyterian denominations, Matthias said, "I think in this day and age the differences are not significant. Most people judge church by what happens on Sunday morning—the theology is very similar."

Even so, Matthias said he feels the most important part of his position doesn't necessarily take place on Sunday morning. "I think the pastoral care of the people is the most important thing," he said, noting that he tries to visit church families and help those in need of prayer, companionship and guidance.

While Matthias is interim pastor of the church, his commitment may be more long term. "We'll see what happens," he said. "I really like the church, everyone's been very nice and encouraging."

On Wednesdays, Matthias sends out a message via e-mail to the congregation with information on the upcoming sermon and other notes of interest. Those interested in receiving the messages may contact Matthias at winestone@aol.com. The church may be reached by telephone at 372-5045.
