Graduates receive diplomas May 29

Eighty-nine graduates marched across the stage on Alleghany High School's Woodruff Field during a ceremony last Friday night.

County announces major budget cuts

A proposed 2009-10 budget that includes job cuts, phasing out of funding for organizations, several reductions, and maintaining the 43 cent tax rate, was released at a meeting of the Alleghany County Commission June 1 by County Manager Don Adams.

Parade planned for July 4

Planning is under way for the Sparta Fourth of July parade, which will happen at 2 p.m. on the actual holiday.

Matthias is new minister at Sparta Presbyterian Church

It was a winding road that led Bob Matthias to the pulpit at Sparta Presbyterian Church.

Wilson celebrates her 100th birthday

Josephine "Josie" Joines Wilson celebrated her 100th birthday May 29 with a visit from family members at Alleghany Care and Rehab.
