The county's overall budget requests for the 2009-2010 totaled $15,871,949, up slightly from the current year's budget running total of $15,871,949. The requests do not include any overall cost of living request for county employees.
According to documents presented to the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners during its meeting on Monday evening, requests for capital needs total $1,021,157. The majority of those requests came from the school system, which is asking for $872,776 in capital needs. Details on the school budget request are detailed in a separate front page story.
Other capital requests include a $2,081 request from the finance office for a fire proof cabinet for terminated personnel files, a $300 request from recreation for pool renovations to pay for new drain cover lids, $4,000 to fund new front doors for the Alleghany County Courthouse and $2,000 for two new computers in the Alleghany Soil and Water Office.
In addition, the building inspections office is requesting $46,300 for two new Ford Explorers and the Alleghany Sheriff's Office is asking for $93,700 in capital needs, including three new pickups, equipment for one new deputy and stun cuffs to enhance courtroom security.
A new deputy position is being requested by the sheriff's office as a result of recommendations from a Courthouse Security Committee, which has asked for a deputy to be stationed in that building, said Sheriff David "Squeak" Edwards.
"We don't have enough personnel to station a man in the Courthouse and still maintain all the duties and responsibilities we
Murphy's dismissal upheld
With little public discussion on the matter, the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to uphold County Manager Don Adams' decision to terminate County Planner Kathy Murphy.
The action came after nearly an hour in closed session to discuss the matter. Chairman Ken Richardson noted that the board had received the appeal from Murphy and was following its personnel policy procedures in reviewing the appeal.
Commissioner Milly Richardson made the motion that the board "stand with the decision made by the county manager."
