A Glade Valley house was destroyed March 25 in what Glade Creek Fire Chief David Higgins has deemed "a flue fire gone wrong."
Mark Reynolds owned the home, located at 11109 Glade Valley Rd., but no one was home at the time of the fire.
According to Higgins, he was at the firehouse when a call came in shortly after 7 p.m. from Reynolds' mother, who said her son's home was on fire. Higgins reported that he called the dispatcher on duty at the Alleghany Law Enforcement Center while he and two other firemen were in route to the scene.
"We were on the scene within three minutes. Upon arrival, we found smoke coming out of the eaves, and you could see fire on the inside of the house. We had the fire under control in 30 minutes but it got so hot in there it ruined everything. We used less than 1,000 gallons of water."
Fire departments from Sparta and Galax, Va. were called in to assist at the scene.
