Multiple fire departments were dispatched early Tuesday morning to a fire that destroyed the home of Carl Dean Edwards on Big Oak Road in Glade Creek.
Firemen not only battled the fire, which had quickly spread through the home soon after they arrived on the scene, but also bitter cold temperatures and icy conditions. The temperature in the county at around the time the firefighters arrived on the scene was 3 degrees Fahrenheit and the ground was covered with snow and ice.
The Edwards family, who were apparently in bed asleep when the fire broke out, were able to escape before the blaze consumed their home and were safely outside as firemen continued to fight the fire around 7 a.m. Mr. Edwards said that he woke up because his dog was barking and he smelled smoke and was able to contact firemen and get his family out of the house, including the dog.
Glade Creek Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Higgins received the call at around 5:30 a.m. Higgins then radioed the call in to dispatch on his way to the scene, requesting that fire trucks be sent.
