Hernandez found guilty of murder

In a special called session of Superior Criminal court, a jury unanimously convicted Enrique Hernandez (Soto) Feb. 12 with first-degree murder in the July 2006 stabbing death of 18-year-old Amy Devon Reese while the two were visiting her mother in Sparta.

Commission overturns planner's decision on land use complaint

By a 4-1 vote following a lengthy quasi-judicial hearing on the matter, the Alleghany County Commission ruled that William Simons had the right to continue storing and selling scrap metals, vehicles and other materials on his property at 1909 Mount Carmel Rd.
