Hernandez murder trial set Monday
The trial of Enrique Hernandez is set to be heard in Alleghany Court beginning Feb. 9, according to a calendar from the Alleghany County Clerk of Court Office.
The special criminal session will be presided over by Judge Richard L. Doughton and John W. Sherrill, an assistant district attorney, will serve as the prosecutor in the matter.
Hernandez, also known as Enrique Hernandez Soto, is charged with first-degree murder in the July 15, 2006 stabbing death of 18-year-old Amy Devon Reese in her mother's Sparta home.
Hernandez is also facing charges of misdemeanor escape from a local jail, assault of a government official or employee and possession of a weapon by a prisoner.
Hernandez came to the area with Reese from Cleveland, Ohio, arriving in Alleghany July 6, 2006 after first traveling via bus to Wytheville, Va. The two were reported to be staying with Reese's family while they visited her mother.
