With January being deemed National Mentoring Month, local mentor Larry Myers opted to share his story of mentoring an 8-year-old Sparta School student.
Myers and his wife Donna moved to the area from Chesapeake, Va. in May 2006, after visiting the county six months prior with family members. Shortly thereafter, the retired air traffic controller found himself busy with volunteer work including volunteering time with Alleghany Christians Associated for Relief and Emergency Services (CARES), delivering food through Meals on Wheels, working with Alleghany In Motion and being active in the church the couple attend, Sparta United Methodist.
He is of the opinion the couple's move to Alleghany was "providential. I believe that God put us here for a purpose," Myers said. "That purpose is to be a servant and I can't think of a higher calling than to be a servant for another human being…."
Draw to Connections
Early last year, the Myers were attending a church service when Ed Adams, a local attorney, addressed the audience about Alleghany Connections, an organization that helps match adults with children who need mentors.
Myers remembers a moment during the speech that he and his wife looked at each other. "It was kind of mutual, (he said of looking at each other).
