Subcommittee meets to discuss school needs

By LAURA THORNBURG
Staff

As it was stated in the board's Jan. 7 meeting, Glade Creek School tops the priority list in terms of facility needs, with exceptions being issues of safety at the local schools.

The subcommittee consists of Superintendent Jeff Cox, Alleghany County Schools Maintenance Director Mike Edwards and Board of Education members Betsy Dillon and Faron Atwood and County Manager Don Adams and Commissioners Doug Murphy and Randy Miller. Miller was unable to attend the meeting due to work obligations.

Referencing the group's first meeting, Cox said, "We understood our charge to be able to go back and develop a list of what our needs were and then, as best we could, start prioritizing those in terms of immediate needs, then maybe two to five years and long term. That's what we've started trying to do."

Cox then distributed a list of needs at the schools among those present. It was noted the items on the list—identified by the board and staff—were not in any prioritized order.

At Alleghany High School, needs included upgrading the school track to six lanes to meet standards to host track meets, repairing the white brick façade of the building, renovating locker rooms under the old gym and replacing carpet in the Cyber Campus.

At Glade, needs included repairing or replacing water and septic system, constructing 11 new classrooms and renovating or replacing the gym and cafeteria.

At Piney Creek, needs include renovating the old shop building to use for storage, covering the walkway and fixing drainage from the gym parking lot to the back entrance.
