An Ennice man lost his life in an accident on New Year's Eve night on Glade Valley Road about 11 miles northeast of Sparta, according to Trooper J.G. Hatcher of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Jesse Arnold Crouse, 23, of Mountain Lake Road, driver of a 2004 Chevrolet, died at the scene of the wreck, which happened around 9:20 p.m., the accident report stated.
A passenger in the vehicle, Mindy Kay Rabara, 18, of Sparta, was flown to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem by emergency helicopter for treatment. Rabara had been released from the hospital as of Tuesday, a hospital spokesperson said.
The report said Crouse was traveling north at a high rate of speed when his car went off on the right shoulder, hit a mailbox and a concrete basin and became airborne. The car struck a fence and began overturning, ejecting Crouse into the road.
The vehicle continued to overturn before coming to rest on the shoulder of the road after striking another fence, the report said.
Alleghany County Rescue Squad personnel were called to the scene to remove Ms. Rabara from the wreckage. Alleghany EMS, Glade Creek Volunteer Fire Department and first responders also responded to the scene.
Damage to the vehicle, registered to Dennis Gene Crouse of Ennice, was estimated at $6,000.
