Several weekend Halloween events were held in the area, including two community events in Sparta. The Alleghany Chamber of Commerce Merchant Committee and the Sparta Revitalization Committee hosted a 'trunk or treat' event at Crouse Park last Friday night, while the Family Resource Center held its annual Halloween Extravaganza Saturday night.
Trunk or Treat
As for the trunk or treat event, this marks the first year the event has been held in the park. In prior years, vehicles parked along Main Street to offer candy to children.
With the move to Crouse Park, the vehicles were in one the park's parking lot areas and other events, including two bounce houses, skateboarding demonstrations, the BeActive activity van and story time. Hotdogs were offered for sale at the skate park.
Chamber Director Bob Bamberg said, "We felt the number of kids on Main Street had become a safety hazard. We were concerned about the children being in the road and the danger from passing automobiles."
While no attendance count was kept, Bamberg said he several hundred children attended the event, "I felt like it was a huge success."
Jane Wyatt with the Alleghany Wellness Center was at the BeActive van and noted that she had given out some 300 glow-in-the-dark necklaces and ran out before the event was over.
