Time for floodplain appeals set

By LAURA THORNBURG
Staff

The 90-day appeal/protest period for those with questions or concerns regarding Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) panels began following the second publication of the public notice in The Alleghany News, which ran Oct. 9 and Oct. 16. The appeal period will conclude Jan. 13, 2009.

A public meeting was held Oct. 28 for those interested in learning more about the flood plain maps and appeal process. Following a mass mailing to more than 700 individuals in the area that are affected by the updated floodplain information, about 20 individuals attended the October meeting, according to County Planner Kathy Murphy. She noted that those in attendance had a chance to view the flood plain maps and ask questions of Steve Garrett, a community development planner with the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program.

The primary questions asked by the attendants involved how the new FIRM panels would affect the property owners, what the process was to build on floodplain property and how the floodplain panels would affect tax values on affected property.
