Alleghany County Sheriff David "Squeak" Edwards narrowly avoided being shot while responding to a call last Wednesday, according to warrants filed by Deputy G. Justin West.
Sheriff Edwards was responding to a call alone on Mount Zion Church Road in Piney Creek when an Apex man shot a pistol in his direction, narrowly missing him, according to a warrant.
Charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault on an officer was Charles Holt Young III, 35, of Apex.
Lt. Tim Duncan said Tuesday that the other deputies and personnel were on the shooting range qualifying with their weapons.
"We were all on the range so he was taking calls for us," said Duncan.
Young had come to the area, apparently intent on camping on his own property when he and a deer hunter from out of the area began arguing. Duncan said the dispute had something to do with Young blocking the right-of-way used to access several pieces of property in the area.
"The best that I can understand, the deer hunter has permission to hunt there but is not a landowner," said Duncan.
At some point in the discussion with the hunter, Young ran into the woods and called the sheriffs office, Duncan commented.
Duncan said the sheriff arrived and spoke to the deer hunter before setting out to find Young.
