Alleghany County Sheriff David "Squeak" Edwards narrowly avoided being shot while responding to a call last Wednesday.

Murder trial set for Superior Court

While the man charged with first-degree murder in the July 2006 death of 18-year-old Amy Devon Reese is on the docket to appear in Alleghany Criminal Superior Court on Oct. 13, it remains uncertain if Enrique Hernandez' case will be among those tried in an upcoming criminal session to be presided over by Judge Edgar B. Gregory.

Miles, a business leader, dies

An Alleghany County native who was active in business and community affairs died at her home on Hickory Mountain Road in Sparta on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 5.

2008 Homecoming Queen

Celeste Caudill received her crown from outgoing homecoming queen Leah Bugielski after being selected as Alleghany High School's 2008 Homecoming Queen.

Local men earn statewide honor

Alleghany educators John Miller and John Woodruff were bestowed the Order of the Long Leaf Pine during a presentation in front of a standing room only audience Oct. 3 at Blue Ridge Electric.

Ed Adams receives a lifetime achievement award from NCNR

Sparta attorney Edmund I. "Ed" Adams recently was awarded the Wallace and Peggy Carroll Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Committee for the New River (NCNR).
