In 1990, Floridians Dave and Pattie Linton, who had lived in Alleghany on a seasonal basis since the early '70s were able to stay in the area for more months each year following their retirements as teachers. Upon their relocation, the couple became active in volunteer efforts such as Alleghany Christians Associated for Relief of Emergency Services (CARES) and other mission efforts in other parts of the world.
In the process of relocating some of the items from their Miami home, they found a lot of things to be duplicated, most of which were still in good working condition. Not having the room for two washers and dryers and such, they began to ask around the community as to where they could donate the extra items.
As a result, the couple found themselves involved with CARES prior to its actual institution, at a time most items to be donated to others were distributed through the Baptist Association, work, at the time, being spearheaded by Cora Neville. Upon Neville's request, the Lintons said they began working with Neville.
"Then, we could see the potential for that work in the community and she asked if we would continue to work with her and we said we didn't want to be in a situation where we would work in one place for a year and have to go to another and go to another," stated Dave. "The financial situation was such that we had to rely on gifts from people and donations from churches in order to pay the rent wherever we were staying.
