During a special called meeting Aug. 20, the members of the Alleghany County Board of Education, sans Faron Atwood, discussed making revisions and updates to policies recently presented by the North Carolina School Board Association.
Four policies, previously selected by School Board Attorney Fred Johnson, were approved for their first reading. The policies that underwent a first reading included items that addressed standards of parental involvement, which are already standard in Alleghany schools, response to bomb threats and addressed a prohibition against retaliation.
During the board's discussion, it also addressed requirements of state and federal law and noted a number of the requirements are addressed in information sent home to parents each year.
Superintendent Jeff Cox stated, "Those are the ones he says are different enough that he would recommend we go ahead and go through the process and have first reading today of those policies…."He noted that Johnson would provide more of an overview of the policy changes during the board's September meeting. Cox added, "The policies, as they're written have been through the School Board Association's legal staff (and have) been gone over to comply with the law. Any variance we make, we need to be cautious because we're varying away from what's already been approved through their legal staff. There certainly will be changes we'll want to make going through this and other sections."
Following a closed session, the board:
• hired Mary C. Allen as a part-time speech language pathologist, Sharon Daniel and Francis Foley as part-time cafeteria workers at Glade Creek, and Monique Iglesias as a migrant coordinator for all schools;
• allowed the transfer of Carol Stolt from a preschool teacher assistant at Sparta School to a preschool teacher assistant at Glade, and Peggy Hines from an exceptional children teacher assistant at Sparta to an exceptional children teacher assistant at AHS;
• approved Martha Ellis and Kristi Marchetti as substitutes at Sparta, Jay Minor as a substitute bus driver, and Stephanie Vogler as a volunteer at Piney Creek; and
• approved Mickey Hendrix as an assistant football coach at Sparta.
