WNC Index shows 2nd quarter up

Western North Carolina economic activity increased .4 percent in June, as measured by the Western North Carolina Economic Index.

River water intake sites down to 3

Proposed sites for a water intake on the New River have been narrowed to three or four sites, Town Manager Bryan Edwards confirmed late last week.

About 5,000 visit fair

With about 5,000 in attendance between last Thursday and Saturday, the Alleghany County Fair was deemed a success by organizers.

Well-known Alleghany men die

Two well-known Alleghany businessmen died last week. The Rev. Clarence G. Priser died Saturday morning, while Odell Reeves Crouse died last Thursday.

Board of Education discusses policy revisions

During a special called meeting Aug. 20, the members of the Alleghany County Board of Education discussed making revisions and updates to policies recently presented by the North Carolina School Board Association.

Pugh honored as oldest living sheriff in the state

Dent Pugh isn't one to talk overly much, but the 93-year-old Alleghany man is a piece of living North Carolina history.
