Carnival, mower race are planned

By LAURA THORNBURG

The Alleghany County Fair will wrap up this weekend culminating Saturday night with the Alleghany Mower Racing Association (AMRA) CarQuest Mowdown. The lawnmower race is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The admission is $6, with children 8 and under admitted free of charge. A fireworks display will also be held as part of the event.

April Hamm, who serves as the chair of the fair committee, commented Tuesday they are expecting between 150 and 200 racers to put their hats in the ring for the upcoming race, which will include 13 classes.

"We're doing a special recognition of all veterans prior to the race," Hamm stated, noting the local Marine Corps league will present colors prior to the race. "We're hoping this is going to be a permanent fixture with the fair activities." Funds raised through the event will benefit the Alleghany Fair and the Alleghany Fairgrounds.

The fireworks, provided by Jeff Hale of Lexington, will begin at the conclusion of the race.

Should Tropical Storm Fay affect the area with inclement conditions, the lawnmower race will be rescheduled for a date yet to be determined. However, the remaining events will not.

Carnival and Petting Zoo

Carnival rides, offered through Brinkley Entertainment Inc., are available to fairgoers beginning tonight through Saturday.
