According to information released last week by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI), Alleghany High School's cohort graduate rate is 81.6, 1.6 points above the 80 percent target goal.
The information is gathered as part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The graduation rate served as an academic indicator in Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results by subgroup.
Last year, the high school attained a cohort graduation rate of 78.3, 1.7 points shy of the 80 percent mark.
Of the high school's accomplishment, Superintendent Jeff Cox remarked, "With the state average at 69.9, I think we were number six in the whole state for the cohort graduation rate. That's something we're very proud of; it's something we work very hard on. One child at a time, we try to make sure every student graduates from high school."
According to a press release sent by the local school system, AHS Principal Paul Crouse was quoted as saying, "We have worked really hard to try to keep every single one of our students in school to graduate. We won't be satified until our graduation rate is 100 percent."
Statewide Information
According to information from DPI, 69.9 percent of students who entered the ninth grade in the fall of 2004 graduated from high school in four years or less.
This shows a minute increase over last year's 69.4 percent. The DPI released a five-year cohort rate of 71.8 percent in relation to the state's 2003-04 ninth graders, which is a 1.5 point increase over last year's 70.3 percent.
Surrounding Areas
While some schools in the surrounding area did not attain as high a mark at Alleghany in the cohort graduation rate, all neighboring schools surpassed that of the state percentage.
Elkin City Schools received the highest cohort rate in the neighboring area, achieving a 89.4 percent rate. Falling just shy of Alleghany's rate was Ashe County Schools with a 80.9.
Surry County Schools reported a 76.2 cohort graduation rate, while Wilkes reported a 72.7 rate.
