Diving In
Diving in to a New Year—Students across the county started back to school on Aug. 6 and the Alleghany High School football team wasted no time "diving in" to work with their new coach, Adolph Shepardson. The team had two scrimmage games last week and will open its season at home against non-conference rival North Wilkes on Friday night. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Woodruff Field on Trojan Avenue in Sparta.

Meanwhile, in the photo at left, children exit a school bus at Sparta School on the first day of school. The students will get their first break on Aug. 29, when a teacher workday is scheduled.
