After nearly 30 years of helping watch the state's roads to protect drivers and pedestrians from unforeseen tragedy, Trooper Steve Roten with the North Carolina Highway Patrol retired.
Roten pointed out that although he has worked 28 years with the Highway Patrol, he has accumulated several days of sick leave that would otherwise be lost if he did not take advantage of them.
The years of service and the excess days add up to a full 30 years of service. Turning in his equipment on July 15, Roten officially retired July 31.
Early Years
Born in neighboring Ashe County, Roten moved to the Glade Creek community with his parents Bunk and Johnsie in 1970, when he was 12 years old.
