The Piney Creek community could have a renovated gymnasium at the K-8 school in as few as 90 days. The announcement was made during an Aug. 5 pre-construction meeting.
The meeting involved contractors with Blue Ridge Enterprises of Mt. Airy, architects with Pinnacle Architecture in Matthews, Project Manager Dan Pardue, Superintendent Jeff Cox, County Schools Maintenance Director Mike Edwards and Piney Creek Principal Mike Edwards.
At the end of May, Blue Ridge Enterprises was one of three companies to bid the project, offering the lowest bid of $722,000. Also offering bids at the time were J.G. Coram Construction of Mt. Airy ($875,000) and J.R. Vannoy & Sons of Jefferson ($995,000).
Toward the end of July, the board learned the Mt. Airy company had negotiated with the superintendent a $549,000 contract price which was approved, subject to Pardue's review and approval.
A breakdown of the revised cost included the $549,000 contract price, $37,500 in architect fees, which accounted for 6 percent of the original budget amount of $625,000, and a $9,100 contingency. It also included a $51,400 allocation to purchase two basketball goals (valued at $9,000) bleachers (valued at $28,000), portable stage equipment (valued at $12,000) and lockers and benches (valued at $2,400). The total budget of the project is $647,000.
