Loader, scales needed at landfill

The Alleghany County Commission learned Monday night that a new loader and new scales will be needed at the Alleghany County Transfer Facility on Osborne Road.
Total cost to replace both pieces of equipment could be as high as almost $175,000. The county will be seeking loan funds to pay for the purchases, thus softening the blow to the budget in an already tight year in which the commissioners made cuts to most requests to avoid raising taxes.
The scales at the former landfill will need to be replaced in the near future, reported County Manager Don Adams, which is in addition to the loader that the county already knew about. Adams said a scale inspection turned up problems with the steel supporting structure for the scales, which were installed in the 1980s. The scales, for which a second bid was received on Monday, will cost between $70,000 and $80,000 to replace, Adams said.
The county had investigated getting the scales repaired, but that will not be possible due to the amount of deterioration, he said.
