Tax free weekend will begin on Aug. 1

Gov. Mike Easley recently announced that North Carolina shoppers will find even greater savings this year during the state's 7th annual state and local sales tax holiday that starts Friday, Aug. 1 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 3.

Three of four local schools meet AYP

Three Alleghany County schools achieved adequate yearly progress (AYP) under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) mandate, according to preliminary results released by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

A family literacy program, chartered through Wilkes Community College, continues to help adults better themselves through education at a convenient location on Main Street in Sparta.

Local volunteers join Ashe honor guard

In recognition of late members of their squad, eight members of the Ashe County Rescue Squad came together in January 2007 to form an honor guard.

Quilt show winners heralded

About 500 people attended the 12th annual Alleghany Quilt and Craft Show held last Friday and Saturday at the Emerson Black Exhibition Building in the Alleghany Fairgrounds.
