Motorcycle accident claims life on Parkway

A New Jersey man lost his life Sunday morning in a single-vehicle wreck near Ice Rock on the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to information provided by District Ranger Brent Pennington.

Petition for liquor by the drink initiated in Sparta

An effort has begun to get liquor by the drink in the Town of Sparta, the Alleghany Board of Elections office confirmed Tuesday.

Second primary is Tuesday

The second primary for the Democrat party is coming up Tuesday and thus far, interest has been extremely low, said Director of Elections Kate Cosner.

Relay for Life raises $43,000

The American Cancer Society's Alleghany County Relay For Life didn't quite reach its goal of $50,000 set for this year.

Numerous weekend events are planned

Several events are on tap this weekend, including a community health fair, a skate park grand opening, a Trail Blazers fund-raiser and a lawnmower race.

New therapist hired at New River

On the first of May, Dr. Mark Sturdivant joined the staff at New River Behavioral Healthcare, where he is employed as a child counselor.
