Susan Nilo, a media specialist at Glade Creek School was recently named the teacher of the year for Alleghany County Schools.
According to Assistant Superintendent John Farrelly, this was the first year that the State Board of Education allowed the entry of media specialists into the process.
Nilo has been worked in the school system for 15 years. Of those, 10 were as a business education and technology teacher, three as a technology facilitator for the county, one as a business education teacher and she recently completed her first year as a media specialist at Glade Creek School.
After learning she received the honor of teacher of the year, Nilo commented, "I am very honored to be named teacher of the year and to be a part of a such a distinguished group of teachers. I know, and have taught with, all of these high quality individuals."
Nilo credits her mother, Marion Robertson who taught 28 years for the local school system, for being an inspiration toward her teaching career.
"My mom inspired me to teach," said Nilo. "She definitely was an inspiration, as well as a support when I was able to teach with her before she retired."
Farrelly remarked, "Susan Nilo is the epitome of teaching excellence. She is an outstanding instructor, a leader, an innovator and a team player. Not only is she an exemplary teacher, but also she has great integrity and character. Ms. Nilo will be a formidable teacher of the year candidate in the statewide competition."
