When new Sparta Postmaster Cliff Brown began his new assignment last week, he surprised one mail carrier when he answered the phone, "This is Cliff."
According to Brown, the carrier thought he was having a joke played on him, thinking the individual on the other end of the phone was jokingly referring to himself as the character Cliff from the popular 1980s and 1990s sitcom "Cheers."
With a chuckle, Brown said, "I get that occasionally. I got it on my first day at Sparta."
After about 25 years with the postal service, Brown recently joined the team at the Sparta Post Office, being named the postmaster of the local office.
Terri Poe had served as the officer in charge of the location for about a year prior to Brown's arrival.
Brown stated he learned of the employment opportunity through advertisements made throughout the Greensboro district by the postal service.
Brown commented, "I came up to Sparta before I applied for the job and looked around a couple times. I love the town and the people have been really friendly towards me. Sparta is a great town. I really enjoy it up here so far."
In his new position, Brown's duties include overseeing the operations, the mail distribution aspect, and delivery of the mail of the local post office. He also is responsible for doing reports and accounting procedures associated with each of the aforementioned functions and for the security of the building.
