Razors EDGE skate park completed

Work on the Razors EDGE (Empowering Developmental Growth Experience) Skate Park, an Eagle project for Alleghany High School student Coalbey Murphy, has been completed and skaters have already begun to try out the new park, located adjacent to Crouse Park at the intersection of N.C. 18 and Grayson Street. A grand opening event for the skate park is scheduled for June 21. Prior to the park's April 26 completion, more than 130 people have put more than 1,650 volunteer service hours toward the project.

The young Murphy serves as the project coordinator, while his mother Kathy serves as the secretary and as an advisor for the skate park project. Mrs. Murphy recently offered a summation of the work and hours put into the Eagle project. Between the project's inception in August 2005 and the project's completion last week, 1,000 hours had be put toward research, design, fund-raising efforts and gaining community support.

During the month of March, the site was graded and fill and stone were placed for the concrete slab. In addition, Tim Stamper's high school masonry class took part in the project, spending a total of 175 hours doing site preparation, placing form work and leveling stone.

During the month of April, more than 360 hours of work were reported to take place at the skate park site. During the greater part of the hours, 162, were spent placing 68 cubic yards of concrete to form the slab that would need to "cure," or be preserved for a two week period before it was officially finished.
