The Alleghany Mower Racing Association held its first points race of the 2008 season for the Tarheel Lumber Racing Series. The race, the CarQuest Spring Mowdown, was held last Saturday at the Justice Carlisle Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds.
A field of 151 mowers competed in 13 divisions, representing a large turnout for the first race of the season. An estimated crowd of 1,200 spectators turned out to see the show, according to AMRA spokesperson April Choate.
"We think the crowd was down because it was raining in parts of the county and people were calling in to see if it was raining here," said Choate. "We had good weather, and we had 151 mowers, so we had a good night."
Choate offered thanks to all the volunteers who helped put on the race and "put in a full day on Saturday."
