About 44 percent of voters turn out for primary election
From Staff Reports
Editor's Note: Curbside and provisional ballots were not included in the early results that were gathered from the Alleghany Board of Elections Tuesday night. Those ballots are generally small in number and the provisional ballots must receive the approval of the Board of Elections before they are counted. Thus, any vote totals listed here are considered incomplete and unofficial. Statewide results were garnered from the N.C. Board of Elections and were reported as of midnight with 94 of the state's 100 counties completed. All results are considered unofficial until they are canvassed, usually the week after the election.
About 44 percent of Alleghany County's registered voters turned out Tuesday to cast ballots in the primary election.
An estimated total of 3,073 cast ballots in the election of about 6,944 voters, including 1,973 votes cast on Election Day, 1,075 cast during One Stop voting and another 60 absentee ballots cast.
Hotly contested races in the Democrat presidential primary and contested governor's and county commission races for both parties appeared to increase interest in this year's primary. According to statewide figures, Alleghany was in the top half of counties for voter turnout.
