The second-annual Relay for Life Fashion Show helped raise about $5,000 for cancer research last Friday night, said Mary Teague, co-organizer of the event.
Teague and Phyllis Miller of The Fashion Zone organized the event, which serves as a fund-raiser for the Grace Community Church Relay for Life Team. The Relay will be held June 13 at Woodruff Field near Alleghany High School in Sparta.
The fashion show raised almost $1,000 more than the one held last year, said Teague and about 50 more people attended.
"It seemed like a whole lot more people there this year," said Teague. "It was a pretty packed house and it was a good turnout this year. Everyone really seemed to enjoy it."
The event, which cost $25 per person to attend, included a buffet meal catered by The Pines, along with the fashion show and other entertainment.
A total of 30 models, including men, women and children particpated in the event.
Clothing featured was provided by Miller's business for the show and included casual wear, sport wear, accessories and formal wear.
Also during the event, several things were given away to people in the crowd including food items, Relay for Life bracelets, Vera Bradley accessories, a golf package from New River Country Club, gift bags with pottery, woodworking items by John Brady and other items.
An auction also was held for a number of items donated by local businesses and artisans for the event. Items included a basket from Bear Essentials Cabin Outfitters, a print by Chris Davis, Mangum pottery, Phyllis Haile pottery, a wooden tray by Brad Wooten, and a ring donated by Lemon's Jewelry.
